Music TheoryDorian & Phrygian: The "Cool" & "Dark" Modes
Dorian & Phrygian: The "Cool" & "Dark" Modes
Goal
Master the first two minor-sounding modes.
Dorian (The Jazz Mode)
Dorian is like a Minor scale but with a "Bright" 6th. It sounds sophisticated and cool.
Playing D Dorian
Start on D.
Play all white keys up to the next D.
D - E - F - G - A - **B** - C - D.
That B natural is the "Magic Note" that makes it Dorian!
Phrygian (The Spanish Mode)
Phrygian is a Minor scale with a Flat 2nd. It sounds incredibly dark and is used in Flamenco music.
Playing E Phrygian
Start on E.
Play all white keys up to the next E.
E - **F** - G - A - B - C - D - E.
Notice how that F (the half step from E) creates instant tension!
Quick Recap
Dorian = Minor + Raised 6th.
Phrygian = Minor + Flat 2nd.
