Meet Your Keyboard
Goal
Understand the layout of white and black keys and find Middle C.
Fun Fact
A standard piano has 88 keys. But don't worry—the pattern just repeats over and over!
Look at the black keys. Notice anything? They are always in groups of 2 and 3.
- •Group of 2: These look like "twins".
- •Group of 3: These look like "triplets".
Middle C is the most important note for beginners. Here is how to find it:
Find a group of 2 black keys.
The white key directly to the left of the 2 black keys is C.
Find the C that is closest to the middle of your keyboard. That is Middle C!
Try This Now
Find all the "groups of 2" on your keyboard.
Find all the "groups of 3" on your keyboard.
Find and play every "C" on your keyboard (the note to the left of the 2 black keys).
Mini Exercise
"Close your eyes, move your hand anywhere on the keyboard, and see if you can find Middle C by feel (using the 2 black keys)!"
Common Mistake
Don't confuse C with F! F is to the left of the group of **3** black keys. Always look for the **2** black keys for C.
Quick Recap
Black keys come in groups of 2 and 3.
C is to the left of the 2 black keys.
Middle C is the center of your piano world.
