The 7 Modes of Music
Goal
Understand the concept of "Modes" and how they change the mood of a scale.
What are Modes?
Imagine the C Major scale (C-D-E-F-G-A-B). Now, imagine playing those exact same notes, but starting and ending on D instead of C. You just played the Dorian Mode. It's the same "alphabet", but with a different "center".
| Mode | Starting Note (in C) | Vibe / Mood |
|---|---|---|
| Ionian | C | Happy, Normal (Major) |
| Dorian | D | Cool, Jazzy, Soulful |
| Phrygian | E | Spanish, Dark, Mysterious |
| Lydian | F | Dreamy, Spacey, Ethereal |
| Mixolydian | G | Bluesy, Rock, Funky |
| Aeolian | A | Sad, Serious (Minor) |
| Locrian | B | Unstable, Dark, Strange |
