Intro to Major Scales

Goal

Learn the construction of a Major scale and play your first C Major scale.

What is a Scale?

A scale is a sequence of notes that sound "right" together. The Major scale is the most common and sounds "Happy".

The Magic Formula

Every Major scale follows a specific pattern of Whole steps (W) and Half steps (H).

📏

Steps Defined

**Half Step (H):** The very next key (black or white). **Whole Step (W):** Two half steps (skip one key).

1

Start on any note (e.g., C).

2

Move: W - W - H - W - W - W - H.

3

You just built a Major Scale!

The C Major Scale

Start on C.

Play only white keys from C to the next C.

Notes: C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C.

Notice how there are no black keys between E-F and B-C? Those are the Half Steps!

Quick Recap

Major scale = Happy sound.

Formula: W-W-H-W-W-W-H.
